FAQ

The Answers You Need To Know

1. Is henna safe?

Commercially available henna cones typically contain chemicals that are harmful to your skin. Original henna is reddish brown in colour. Other colours such as black and white are not natural henna. “Black henna” do not contain any henna and it comes from other plants or from other questionable substances entirely. It may contain para-phenylenediamine (PPD). This chemical stains skin black but it is dangerous: it sometimes causes severe allergic reactions and permanent scarring.

Here’s a quick tip on finding organic henna:

Organic henna has to be stored in the fridge to preserve quality as their quality can deteriorate at room temperature and you can only find them at private businesses. Safe and organic cones are available for sale at Mehandybysaf.

If you are extra careful, you can apply vaseline everyday to prevent contact with water.

4. When do I apply my bridal henna?

You can start your bridal henna on the evening and keep it overnight so you can keep it for about 6-8 hours (recommended). Get your henna wrapped so you can get a good night’s sleep without the worry of smudging your henna!

5. What is white henna? How long does it last?

White henna is not natural henna and it is getting popular for festive seasons and bridals. It can last up to 4 days.

Do not buy Golecha white henna from stores as it does not stick to your skin [SCAM ALERT!] You can do a patch "patch test" on a small area of the skin before using them. Get your white henna from trusted brands.

6. Can I remove the henna quickly if I want it gone?

Removing the henna is not guaranteed but speeding up the fading process is possible. Natural henna fades away as the days go. Exfoliation is the only possible way to fade the henna faster. You can try these methods:

  • Soaking your hands in warm soapy water and exfoliate

  • Whitening toothpaste scrubbed over the stain may help

  • Using lemon and baking soda mixture to scrub your henna

Since the stain is on the top layer of the skin, you can try the above methods but they do not completely vanish the stain.

7. Is henna edible?

Henna leaves are used in medicine due to its chemical properties in reducing inflammations. There is some information that henna might decrease the growth of tumors, prevent or reduce spasms, decrease inflammation, and relieve pain.

However do not consume it on your own without any prescription. It is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
